‘A City Upon a Hill’: The Pilgrim Fathers and America’s English Puritan Legacy
[OLE3303]

Ronnie Hanna, BA, MA

5 weekly sessions on Tuesdays 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm, starting 30 April

In November 1620, 400 years ago, a small vessel anchored in Cape Cod Bay in the area designated as New England. On board the Mayflower were 102 English men and women, many of them Puritan separatists, who would establish a colony in this part of North America, and in the next two decades many more would follow them. This is the opening page of modern America’s story of national origin and the foundation of that country’s Puritan legacy. The Puritans set out to establish what one of their number, John Winthrop, called ‘a city upon a hill’ – an example to the rest of the world and, for many, a beacon of hope.
