Genre fiction – for example crime, fantasy, sci-fi and romance – is often perceived as somehow inferior to literary fiction, more a form of light entertainment rather than true drama.  But writing genre fiction is a rigorous calling.  It demands inventiveness in plots, settings and characters as its authors weave entertaining stories filled with twisting narratives and compelling characters.  In this course you will learn about structure, setting, description, characterisation, plotting, dialogue, point of view, and how to fashion a compelling story that appears not simply on the page but lives in the reader’s imagination.  The course will draw on contemporary examples of successful genre novels to illustrate these themes and will leave participants equipped for and embarked on the journey of writing their own genre fiction novel or short story collection.
