Language and Society
[OLE3351]

Nicole Marinaro, MA

Autumn 2024

10 weekly sessions on Wednesdays 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm, starting 25 September

This course offers an introduction to a range of topics linked to the relationship between language and society. How do social characteristics like age, gender and ethnicity influence language? How do plurilingual individuals interact, and how do multilingual societies work? How are attitudes and stereotypes towards languages and dialects born, and what impact do they have? Why do languages go extinct, and how can this be changed? Each week, we will focus on a different question. After an introduction to the topic in the first hour, in the second half of the class we will reflect on the significance of these questions in our everyday lives. If you look for it…I’ve got a sneaky feeling you’ll find that linguistic diversity, actually, is all around!
