Could the Holocaust have been Prevented?
[OLE3333]

Matthew Barr, PhD

Autumn 2024

10 weekly sessions on Mondays 11.00 am to 1.00 pm, starting 23 September

Many sources written during or shortly after the 1940s seem to want to make the reader think that the Allies were quite unaware of the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the east, certainly of the scale of it.  But was this the case?  This course will discuss what exactly was known about the death camps.  We will look at incredibly courageous figures such as Jan Karski who risked their lives to try to gather evidence of the mass murders taking place and bring it to the attention of the highest authorities.  Could more have been done?  If so, what and by whom?  Which options were considered?  What discussions took place and why did the Allies fail to prevent the most notorious massacre in history?

Fee £92.00 (concession rate £66.00)
