[OLE3343]

Robyn Atcheson, BA, MA, PhD

Autumn 2024

Half-day workshop on Saturday 9 November, 10.00 am to 1.00 pm

In 2024, the life and work of a remarkable Belfast woman was recognised by a new statue on the grounds of Belfast City Hall.  This half-day class will look at the life of Mary Ann McCracken, a middle-class Presbyterian woman who owned her own business, championed political campaigns against the slave trade and worked tirelessly for the poor of her town.  For too long, Mary Ann’s story was one neglected by the traditional history of Belfast as are the stories of other remarkable Belfast women.  The second half of this class looks at other nineteenth-century women overlooked in Belfast’s story including Isabella Tod, Margaret Byers, Alice Milligan, Winifred Carney and Amy Carmichael.

Fee £18.00 (no concession)
