A History of the USA: Part 6, Cowboys, Indians and the Closing of the Frontier, 1865–1900
[OLE3325]

Ronnie Hanna, BA, MA

Autumn 2024

10 weekly sessions on Wednesdays 11.00 am to 1.00 pm, starting 25 September

The sixth part of the History of the USA series will cover the period between the end of the Civil War and the end of the century, when white control was re-established in the South as the nation was ‘reconstructed’.  These years also see the last of the Indian wars against the tribes of the Great Plains, including the pyrrhic Indian victory at the Battle of the Little Bighorn, while it is also the era of the great cattle drives from Texas to the railhead towns such as Abilene.  At the same time that the Western frontier is closing, in the East it is a time of mass immigration and the accumulation of vast fortunes by industrialists and speculators.
