The first part of this new series, 'The Second World War, Year by Year', focuses on the steady descent into European conflict in 1939. The hopes for peace raised at Munich in September 1938 began to wither, as first Czechoslovakia was dismembered and then Germany demanded redress of her grievances from Poland. War became a certainty when Germany and the USSR sworn ideological enemies signed a non-aggression pact. But the year had already been a violent one, with Italy's attack on Albania, and the closing chapter of the Civil War in Spain. In fact, for a time Europe seemed more peaceful after the war had begun and Poland crushed than it had been before. But the so-called 'Phoney War' would not last. Yet, as the storm clouds had gathered, far to the west a shaft of light broke through the gloom as George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited Canada and the United States, laying the foundations for vital alliances to come.
