No matter if and what way you voted in the 2016 referendum on the UK membership of the European Union, it is impossible to be unaffected by the fallout from it. In fact, Brexit has seen a change to the legal, economic, political and social situation for Northern Ireland unlike any other – and its effects will continue to be felt for generations. This course is an ‘essential guide’ to what Brexit means for Northern Ireland. Drawing on sociology, political science, law and economics. This course will be delivered, with plenty of room for Q&A, in five classes of two hours and will include the following:

1. Northern Ireland in the EU - What the EU is and what membership means; the impact of European integration in Northern Ireland

2. The Brexit process & ramifications - the EU’s approach to Brexit; The UK negotiating tactics and Northern Ireland

3. The Post-Brexit UK-EU agreements - the Withdrawal Agreement and the Protocol; the Trade and Cooperation Agreement

4. The impact of Brexit on Northern Ireland; The enduring debate over the Protocol; The negotiation of the Windsor Framework

5. Long-term implications of Brexit for Northern Ireland - What the Protocol/Windsor Framework means; Where the future UK-EU relationship may go
