New Year 2025

In 1939, Hitler (and Stalin) had conquered Poland in just six weeks, but then the guns had fallen silent. All was quiet on the Western Front throughout the autumn and winter, but, as we will see in this second part of the series The Second World War Year by Year, in the spring of 1940, the Fuhrer returned to the war path. First Norway and Denmark and then the Low Countries succumbed to the Nazi blitzkrieg. With the fall of France, only Britain, with her new inspirational Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, remained defiant. He could offer his fellow countrymen and women only 'blood, toil, tears and sweat', and the experience of Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain and the beginning of the Blitz confirmed that he was not exaggerating. With the entry of Italy into the war, conflict now also spread to North Africa.
