Steve Flanders, BA, MA, PhD
Autumn 2024
10 weekly sessions on Tuesdays 10.00 am to 12.00 noon, starting 24 September
Pope Alexander VI and his family have gone down in history as depraved, licentious and murderous. As a cardinal he fathered several children and these, in turn, have become notorious. Lucretia was vilified as a poisoner, Cesare was Machiavelli’s inspiration for The Prince, while their father is remembered as a scheming and duplicitous leader of the Catholic church. This course aims to disentangle fact from fiction, and to arrive at a more balanced view of this extraordinary 15th century family.
