New Year 2025
10 weekly sessions on Tuesdays 10.00 am to 12.00 noon, starting 21 January
Created by the German Emperor, Charlemagne in 800 AD, the Holy Roman Empire stretched across most of Europe for almost a thousand years until its formal dissolution in 1806 following its conquest by Napoleon. Voltaire famously stated that it was neither ‘holy’, ‘Roman’ nor an ‘empire’, but the lengthy history of this remarkable political entity suggests that the French philosopher might not have got it right. By his time Charlemagne’s empire had become the Habsburg’s family business and their marriage connections united modern Germany, Austria, Spain, Portugal and the Low Countries, in addition to numerous smaller territories. The approach will be thematic rather than purely chronological, although it will use an outline history to place everything in context and give an overall picture of this remarkable aspect of European history.
