Most people know of Robert Burns (1759-96) through Burns Night suppers or a few popular songs, such as 'Auld lang syne' sung on New Year's Eve', but the story of his life is fascinating, inspiring and tragic. His letters reveal that he had many loves, many friends and a brilliant engaging personality, while his poetry both entertains and shows his deep concern for working people and for the poor in an era well before human rights and democracy could be taken for granted. This course will examine Burns's tempestuous and romantic life primarily as it is revealed in his correspondence. The course tutor has spent many years researching Burns's letters and has published essays on Burns biography in the Oxford Handbook of Robert Burns (2024).
