Carol Baraniuk, BA, PhD
New Year 2025
5 weekly sessions on Wednesdays 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm, starting 12 March
Most people know Robert Burns's work only through a few famous songs such as 'Auld Lang Syne' or 'Red, Red Rose'. This course will facilitate better acquaintance with Burns and his many faces as a poet: humourist, satirist, story teller, lover and folk song collector. It will celebrate the wit, pathos, craft and inspiration of his work, and examine the poems and songs within the context of his short, densely packed life. No previous detailed knowledge of poetry analysis is necessary for participants. The course will consider how Burns's work has been presented by singers, musicians and artists in different periods. The course tutor has spent many years researching Burns's poetry and letters, and has published essays on Burns in the Oxford Handbook of Robert Burns (2024).
