Language and Society in Film
[OLE3340]

Nicole Marinaro, MA

New Year 2025

5 weekly sessions on Wednesdays 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm, starting 22 January

The proposed course aims to use films as a medium to introduce concepts linked to the relationship between language and society.  Starting from the screening of a section of a relevant movie, each class would then comprise, through the combination of lecture-like and seminar-like teaching, the presentation and discussion of a topic within the academic field of sociolinguistics.  The provisional list of topics to be discussed includes language and power, language and identity, language extinction, linguistic relativism and sign languages.  The vision of movies through a sociolinguistic lens represents a transversal approach to the field, aiming to encourage students to identify phenomena related to linguistic diversity in the media and art they consume and engage with; as well as in their daily lives.
