Mary Montague, BSc, PGCE, MSc, PhD
New Year 2025
10 weekly sessions on Mondays 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm, starting 20 January
The theory of evolution has continued to develop from the Neo-Darwinian synthesis of the mid-twentieth century by incorporating new scientific findings. The discoveries that began with the recognition that DNA was the molecule of inheritance continue to inspire and challenge not only scientists, but also wider society. We will look at the contributions of Watson and Crick, Dawkins and Gould, and others. We will discuss how twenty-first century evolutionary theory continues to excite through its ability to assimilate new understandings of genetics, development and plasticity. This will throw further light on our appreciation of the inseparability of evolution and ecology thereby yielding even greater understanding of the diversity of life on our green and blue planet.
