This course considers the period in which growing British power is founded on the supremacy of the Royal Navy and the political stability of the Hanoverian state. It is not, however, all ‘plain sailing’, for there is a final Jacobite challenge to be faced in 1745–46 and rebellion in America, leading to the loss of the colonies there. These years also see the rise and demise of the slave trade and the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution that will transform Britain in the nineteenth century.
