Steve Flanders, BA, MA, PhD
New Year 2025
10 weekly sessions on Thursdays 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm, starting 23 January
Throughout Queen Victoria’s long reign, Britain was at war with someone or other, somewhere across the world. Not a day passed when the Empire’s troops were not engaged in fighting, attacking other empires, creating colonies or advancing trade. Starting with the opium wars in China and covering campaigns in the Crimea, Afghanistan, New Zealand, and South Africa, amongst others, this course will consider the incessant military activity of the empire on which the ‘sun never set’.
