Geraldine O'Neill, BA, MA, PhD
Autumn 2024
20 weekly sessions on Wednesdays 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm, starting 25 September
If you have a good understanding of Classical Greek grammar and an interest in the world of ancient Greece, then you will enjoy this course. This year we will read Aeschylus' 'Persians'. This play is significant for two reasons: it is the earliest extant Greek tragedy [472 B.C.] and deals with the battle of Salamis [480 B.C.] in which the poet Aeschylus himself fought. It is set in the court of the king of Persia as they await news of the battle. As well as dealing with translation and points of grammar, we will discuss the portrayal of Athens at this pivotal moment in its history and the development of Greek-Barbarian identity.
Textbook: 'Aeschylus Persians', edited with commentary by Edith Hall, (Aris & Phillips).
