One of the most revolutionary periods in Europe extended from the late 18th Century to encompass much of the 19th Century. Poetry was no exception. This was the Age of Revolutions, including the French and Irish and societal transformations in Britain, starting with the Industrial Revolution which made a slave of the child, thus giving rise to radical ideas, such as Parliamentary reform, expanded suffrage and abolitionism. Occasionally violence followed, as in the Peterloo massacre of 1819. Romantic poets, emboldened by the spirit of freedom, believed in self-expression, the imagination, beauty, fantasy and in reaching the sublime. As well as the major poets, Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Byron and Keats, we will look at female poets such as Charlotte Smith as well as Burns.
