Building an Alternative Canon
[OLE3327]

Jaime Harrison, PhD

New Year 2025

10 weekly sessions on Wednesdays 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm, starting 22 January

What fiction is often omitted from discussions of a literary canon? Lists of literature recognised for cultural or aesthetic merit are often criticised as being Euro-centric. This course will guide readers through some of the powerful and diverse voices which are often overlooked. It will explore works which, while often canonical in their own context, tend to be read less in the UK and Ireland: Tony Birch - The White Girl, Jean Rhys - Wide Sargasso Sea, Patrick Chamoiseau – Texaco, Yuko Tsushima - Territory of Light, Hua Hsu - Stay True, Eden Robinson - Monkey Beach, Sandra Cisneros - Woman Hollering Creek, Daniyal Mueenuddin - In Other Rooms, Other Wonders, Miriam Tlali - Between Two Worlds, Alejo Carpentier - The Lost Steps.

Fee £92.00 (concession rate £66.00)

10 CATS Points (Level 1)

This class will take place on QUB campus

Concession: The concession rate is available for those who are in receipt of State Benefits (including pension), or are full-time students, part or full-time Queen’s students or are members of University staff holding a valid staff card:
