Autumn 2024
10 weekly sessions on Thursdays 10.00 am to 12.00 noon, starting 26 September
Sir Bernard Spilsbury was a remarkable man who made a significant contribution to the science of criminal forensic investigation in the early decades of the 20th century. In particular, he played a crucial role in a series of high-profile murder trials including that of Dr Crippen, the insurance agent Seddon, the dandelion-hating solicitor, Herbert Armstrong and Mancini, who was linked to the Brighton Trunk murders. Spilsbury rapidly became a media celebrity and was eventually regarded as an unimpeachable expert witness. The course will look at Spilsbury’s life and then move on to examine nine of his most famous murder cases before concluding with an assessment of this forthright but, perhaps flawed individual.
